Common in the Caribbean
and indo-Pacific islands, G. toxicus has been found in over 400 species of
tropical reef fish. No known processing procedures, including cooking, are protective, so
ciguatera poisoning is hard to prevent; presence of the toxins in fish does not affect
their appearance, smell or taste.
