The Lenape’s identity as a nation seems to have been retroactively constructed after colonial contact – that is, it became necessary for the Lenape to present themselves in categories like nationhood and identity that colonial powers could understand. There were at least seventeen Lenape villages where Philadelphia is now, including: Pahsayunk (“in the valley”), now western South Philly, along the east shore of the Schuylkill, where it empties into the Delaware River.
